Description

At Saily, we’re removing the hassle from getting secure data plans while traveling.

No roaming charges, no plastic SIM cards. Just fast, secure mobile data in 200+ countries. Join the team behind Lonely Planet’s #1 eSIM—built for explorers, powered by NordVPN.

Your impact? Helping people stay securely connected, wherever they go.

Saily Design team:

The Saily Design Team is a tight, multidisciplinary group of Product designers, Web designers, UX writers, and Graphic designers. We're building Saily, the eSIM for travelers, from the people behind NordVPN, into the simplest way to stay connected anywhere in the world. We aim to take the complexity out of mobile connectivity for everyone who travels. We thrive on honest feedback to help each other grow and believe in the freedom to take initiative, be bold, and run with new ideas.

The Role:

We are looking for a builder. You'll join the Saily design team as its Design Engineer: someone who takes an idea from a sketch to something running on a device, who is as at home in a pull request as in a design review, and who would rather change how a team works than hand it another spec. You'll sit between design and engineering, shape the workflows that let designers ship, and evolve our design system into something people actually build and prototype with.

If you thrive at the intersection of design and code, treat the last 10% of polish as your actual job, and are excited about rebuilding design workflows around AI rather than bolting AI onto old ones, this role is for you.

How we work:

You'll work across the Saily app and the web, close to the designers and to the engineers who build what they design, as the central bridge between design, engineering, and product: the system, the tooling around it, and the workflows that let product teams ship faster with higher quality.

We operate on principles of:

  • User-Focus & Transparency: Decisions driven by user needs and open communication.
  • Collaboration & Trust: Fostering strong partnerships across disciplines.
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: Evolving the system to meet changing needs.
  • Accessibility & Inclusivity: Ensuring our products are usable by everyone.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Bridge Design & Code: Actively participate in the design process, providing technical input, prototyping interactions, and translating design concepts into polished, interactive, and performant UI components (the "front-of-the-frontend"), and own the technical link between our design system and the codebases that consume it, on web and native platforms.
  • Rebuild workflows around AI: Shape how the design team works with AI-native tooling, from prototyping and design-to-code to data, and make those ways of working the default rather than the exception.
  • Evangelize & Innovate: Champion best practices and drive the adoption of design automation, tooling, and testing strategies within the design engineering context.
  • Prototype and ship: Take ideas from concept to working software, from interactive prototypes on real devices to production web UI, and set the standard for how quickly a design idea becomes something you can hold.
  • Contribute to Saily's visual and interaction language: Component anatomy, variants, states, interaction behavior, and motion, in Figma and in code, often moving between the two in the same working session.
  • Technical Ownership: Own the technical implementation and architecture of the design system components, ensuring high standards for code quality, performance, and design fidelity.
  • Enable Teams: Guide, train, and support product development teams in effectively adopting and utilizing the design system, the tooling, and the workflows.
  • Craft Interactions: Implement engaging animations and micro-interactions to enhance user experience, especially for key user-facing elements.
  • Ensure Accessibility: Build and maintain accessible components, ensuring compliance with relevant standards (e.g., WCAG AA) to create inclusive experiences.
  • Build internal design tooling: Figma plugins, CLI utilities, CI checks, prototyping tools, data tooling, and other AI-native workflows.

Core Requirements:

  • Design System Expertise: Proven experience building, maintaining, and scaling design systems. Deep understanding of design system principles, component architecture, and token strategies.
  • Front-End Proficiency: Strong command of JavaScript, modern CSS (including TailwindCSS), and semantic HTML. Demonstrated ability to become productive in an unfamiliar stack quickly.
  • Design Craft: Strong product design fundamentals, visual hierarchy, typography, spacing, and interaction design. Able to make sound design decisions independently and contribute to design, not just implement it.
  • AI-native Working: You already build with coding agents and AI tooling, and can show what it changed about the way you ship.
  • Design Tool Fluency: Comfortable in Figma: variables, components, and accurate design-to-code translation.
  • Collaboration Skills: Excellent ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines (design, engineering, product) and drive adoption of best practices.

Strong Pluses:

  • A portfolio that mixes shipped product work and things you built yourself.
  • Experience shipping in more than one technology already. Web plus any native platform.
  • Shipped Figma plugins or REST API integrations.
  • Experience on a platform team where other designers and engineers are your users.
  • SQL / BigQuery, or another habit of answering design questions with data.
  • Style Dictionary (especially v4) or comparable token pipeline experience; DTCG format familiarity.
  • Creative-dev range for brand work: GSAP, Three.js/WebGL.
