Role Overview

We are hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to build the software that connects Revel's real-time control system to operators and applications. Our backend includes the core runtime that executes RevelCode – our proprietary language for deterministic hardware control – the command and telemetry bus, and the services and APIs behind the Revel Console.

You will work primarily in Rust on systems that deliver commands, provide live visibility into hardware and automation, and support configuration and deployment. Revel operates in industrial environments where reliability matters, a missed command can have physical consequences, and customer systems may run without internet access.

What You'll Do

• Design and build backend services and core runtime components in Rust.
• Improve command delivery and live telemetry transport between the runtime, backend services, APIs, and UIs.
• Define and implement clear behavior for connection loss, recovery, and failures.
• Build services and APIs for system configuration, deployment, control, and monitoring.
• Investigate latency, throughput, and reliability issues across runtime and service boundaries.
• Work with embedded engineers on the interface between device drivers and the runtime.
• Work with frontend and product teams to support operator workflows and shape technical requirements.
• Maintain production systems with a focus on correctness, performance, and long-term reliability.

Must-Have Experience

• 7+ years of backend or systems engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Rust, or strong C++ and systems programming experience with a genuine interest in learning Rust.
• Production experience with concurrent programming, network communication, and message delivery, streaming data, or real-time transport.
• Ability to diagnose complex system behavior and make sound design decisions when requirements are still taking shape.
• Experience building and operating services where failure has consequences beyond a retry.

Plusses

• Experience with hardware, industrial control, IoT, or real-time systems.
• Experience with on-premise deployments or systems that operate without internet access.

Team & Exposure

You will work closely with a small, highly technical team building the core of Revel's platform. This role is cross-functional: you'll partner with embedded engineers on the hardware interface and with frontend and product teams on operator workflows. You will have meaningful ownership over system design and contribute directly to how Revel's runtime and control infrastructure evolves.
