Description

Before the detail, here's the challenge you'd help us solve.

We build the embodied intelligence that moves real vehicles safely, and the ecosystem a billion machines will run on in the future. Very few people in AI can say this. Every role here, whatever the team, plugs into that.

Here’s what this particular role covers.

🛠️ About our Fleet Operations Team

Our Fleet Operations Team is responsible for maintaining the safety, performance, and operational readiness of Wayve's autonomous vehicle fleet — from routine servicing and diagnostics to urgent repairs and vehicle readiness for high-visibility events. The team keeps our fleet in peak condition to support testing, demonstrations, and real-world deployment, working closely with engineering, drivers, and operations teams to keep autonomy moving forward, every single day.

🧠 Your day-to-day
The Field Engineer is a hands-on technical contributor responsible for diagnosing and resolving vehicle software and hardware issues to keep the fleet operational. They will play a critical role in rapid fault triage, ensuring a 5-minute response time while strictly adhering to safety protocols. Working closely with fellow engineers and global teams, they will contribute to seamless operations through effective communication and problem-solving. As part of a newly established function within Fleet Operations, the Field Engineer will help refine processes and drive efficiency in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

🧩 What you'll be working on

  • Perform on-site fault triage and resolution, diagnosing and repairing vehicle software and hardware issues quickly to maintain fleet uptime.
  • Follow structured fault diagnosis and repair protocols, ensuring all work is carried out efficiently and in alignment with operational workflows.
  • Collaborate with fellow field engineers and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues effectively.
  • Respond rapidly to issues, meeting the 5-minute issue response to keep vehicles operational and our teams feeling adequately supported.
  • Maintain clear communication with the Field Engineering Lead, providing updates on ongoing repairs and ensuring smooth handovers across geographical locations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, assisting with technical support and issue resolution across multiple regions as part of a 24/7 global support network.
  • Adhere to strict safety and compliance protocols, ensuring all fault triage, diagnosis, and repairs follow the correct procedures and approvals.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, identifying operational challenges and providing feedback to optimise field engineering support and efficiency.

🙌 You should apply if

Essential:

  • You hold a Japan Driver's License.
  • You speak both Japanese (N2 or above) and English (fluency is a must).
  • You have strong technical expertise — a solid understanding of vehicle diagnostics, software and hardware fault triage, and repair processes. Experience in fleet operations, automotive systems, or ADAS technology is a plus.
  • You can troubleshoot and resolve technical issues quickly, meeting strict SLAs (5-minute response time) to keep vehicles operational.
  • You communicate and collaborate well — capable of working closely with global teams, providing clear technical updates, and ensuring smooth handovers across locations.
  • You have a deep understanding of safety protocols, incident management, and adherence to operational procedures to ensure secure and effective repairs.
  • You're adaptable and flexible, comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment, including on-call rotations and weekend coverage as needed.
  • You're familiar with diagnostic tools, software monitoring platforms (e.g., Datadog, Mender), and ticketing systems like JIRA.

Desirable:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.Sc. or equivalent) in Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of ADAS on-road testing, safe vehicle-operation procedures, and relevant safety or high-voltage/EV certifications.
  • High-voltage/EV certification and practical experience diagnosing EV systems.
  • A demonstrated continuous-improvement mindset: able to identify recurring vehicle issues, turn field observations into actionable feedback, and help improve repair processes, vehicle uptime, and operational safety.

Additional requirements:

  • This role is based on a rota with a shift pattern, Monday to Sunday (must be able to work weekends): 06:30–15:30 or 14:30–23:30.
  • On-site at our office in Tokyo or Yokohama. Tokyo will be the main place of work, but you might be required to go to Yokohama office sometimes when there is a business need.
  • All applicants are required to disclose any second job as part of the application process.
  • All applications are subject to a health check before/after.
  • Employment is contingent on passing training, pre-employment checks and ongoing drug/alcohol testing, per our policy. You'll be tested for drugs and alcohol during your onsite interview.

🌱 Not ticking every box? That’s totally okay! If you’re passionate about autonomy and keen to learn, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every requirement.

More about Wayve:

🚀 Wayve is building the leading AI platform for autonomous driving. We are pioneering an end to end AI approach that enables vehicles to learn directly from real world experience, developing the ability to adapt, generalise and improve at scale. Instead of relying on hand coded rules or pre mapped environments, our AI Driver learns to drive by understanding the world around it.

The result is technology that navigates complex urban environments with intelligence, precision and natural flow, unlocking meaningful advances in both safety and efficiency. We believe autonomy represents a once in a generation transformation in how people and goods move, comparable to the shift from horses to cars, and from human driven vehicles to intelligent machines.

Our ambition is to make autonomy universal. Wayve’s mapless and hardware agnostic AI platform integrates with global OEM partners, enabling continuous software evolution and unlocking advanced levels of automation from L2 plus through to L4 as our core AI model scales. In a race increasingly defined by intelligence and real world learning, Wayve is taking a distinct approach, building a generalisable driving intelligence that can power any vehicle, anywhere.

By combining embodied AI with scalable deployment, we are creating technology that can be shaped to each OEM brand and driver experience, accelerating the transition to a safer, more intelligent future of mobility.

A quick, honest note before you apply.

Wayve is not a mature, fully-structured place with the playbook already written. Much of how we work is still being written, and if you join, you’ll help write it. That suits people who want real ownership more than people who need a settled structure from day one.

If that sounds like the kind of problem you want to spend your time on, we’d really like to hear from you.
