About the role
About the Team
OpenAI’s Corporate Security (CorpSec) team protects our people, places, and operations so that employees can safely pursue our mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The team partners across the company to enable a secure, resilient, and trusted environment that supports both safety and innovation.
We operate in dynamic, high-visibility environments, including dense urban offices and major events where discretion, credibility, and sound judgment are essential. The Corporate Security team works closely with Real Estate & Workplace, Legal, Communications, HR, IT, and external partners to maintain a proactive and people-first security posture.
About the Role
The Security Operations Manager owns day-to-day physical security operations and end-to-end security programs across assigned sites. The role is accountable for vendor performance, staffing and training plans, incident readiness, and recurring operational improvements that protect OpenAI’s people, facilities, and business activities.
The ideal candidate combines hands-on operational leadership with independent program ownership, sound judgment, and strong cross-functional partnerships. They anticipate risks, resolve competing operational priorities, build repeatable procedures, and coordinate effective incident responses while escalating material risks and resource decisions through established channels.
This role reports to the Senior Security Operations Manager and will include both domestic and international travel in support of Event Security, and other CorpSec ongoing and developing initiatives.
In this role you will:
- Office Security: Security Operations & Program Ownership: Own security operating plans and program outcomes across assigned sites, including guard coverage, staffing and training plans, access control, visitor management, post orders, and emergency readiness. Set clear expectations for contracted providers and review staffing, schedules, service quality, invoices, and corrective actions within delegated budget and contract authority. Assess changing risks, coordinate incident response with GSOC and relevant partners, and ensure timely escalation, accurate reporting, and completion of corrective actions.
- Events: Partner with CorpSec’s Event Security Team to coordinate secure operations for internal, external, and offsite events, including occasional domestic and international travel; provide support to the Corporate Security Executive Protection Team on executive travel logistics as needed.
- Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement: Establish and strengthen relationships with local law enforcement agencies, local emergency services, peer security organizations, and other external partners to stay current on emerging risks; partner with Real Estate & Workplace, Legal, HR, Communications, and IT on security planning, access control, and incident response.
- Policy Development & Compliance: Own and maintain SOPs, post orders, training materials, and escalation procedures for assigned sites and programs, aligned with CorpSec standards and applicable requirements. Use assessments, drills, incident reviews, and operational measures to identify gaps and improve consistency. Contribute recommendations and reusable practices to the relevant global program owners for broader adoption.
You might thrive in this role if you have:
- Professional Experience: 10+ years in law enforcement, corporate security, protective services, or comparable operational security roles, with a strong understanding of physical security in corporate environments. Law enforcement experience preferred.
- Program Management: Demonstrated success owning end-to-end physical security programs across multiple sites, including vendor delivery, staffing, training, incident readiness, and continuous improvement. Able to resolve ambiguity, balance competing priorities, and deliver outcomes through cross-functional partners.
- Technical Experience: Working knowledge of access control, surveillance, visitor management, and intrusion detection systems. Able to translate operational risks and business needs into requirements and partner with Office Technology and Design & Construction on testing, commissioning, and transition to full operations.
- Operational Leadership: Proven skill in creating, revising, and executing SOPs to ensure consistent and efficient security practices, alongside training programs for both security personnel and broader teams.
- Vendor Management: Demonstrated ability to manage contracted security providers, including coverage and staffing plans, training, service quality, performance reviews, invoice review, and corrective actions within delegated authority.
- Relationship Building: Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with internal teams and external agencies, forging strong, collaborative relationships; skilled at building trust and collaboration across teams.
- Operational Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead calmly under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and communicate with clarity and confidence in dynamic situations.
- Crisis & Event Management: Demonstrated experience in coordinating and collaborating on risk-appropriate security plans for events and executive activity within the assigned scope, including staffing, access, communications, and contingency measures. Partner with Crisis Management, Events, GSOC, and Executive Protection as appropriate, providing additional support and travel when assigned by CorpSec leadership.
- Integrity & Approach: High integrity, discretion, and a people-first mindset that prioritizes safety, collaboration, and respect.
- Adaptability & Resilience: Comfortable working in a dynamic environment, swiftly pivoting in response to emerging threats or organizational changes.
- Travel: Ability and willingness to travel as required for the role’s approved site, event, and project responsibilities.
