About the role
With over 30,000 customers, including a third of Fortune 500 companies, Tempo is trusted by organizations across the globe to make their workflows work better.
We create a suite of integrated solutions for time management, resource planning, budget management, roadmapping, program management, reporting and more. We create the tech that enables the modern team to deliver – for every step from first vision to value.
Since our beginning in 2007 as a project to make a time-tracking tool to help a client – Tempo has expanded to become the #1 time management add-on for Jira, and we have developed and acquired a multitude of tools to become one of the most trusted names in the Atlassian ecosystem.
We want everyone to work better – but we also want to be a tech company with a heart. Join us as we continuously innovate our award-winning products, create new solutions, and help the world work smarter, not harder.
About the role:
We are looking for a passionate and experienced software developer to join our Platform Team. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the foundational infrastructure that powers all of Tempo's cloud products – Tempo Timesheets, Capacity Planner, and Financial Manager for Jira Cloud. As a Staff Developer, you'll drive technical decisions, mentor engineers across teams, and ensure our platform is scalable, reliable, and developer-friendly.
The best fit for our team is someone who thinks holistically about systems, cares deeply about developer experience, and wants to solve complex infrastructure challenges at scale.
What you’ll do:
- Design, build, and maintain platform infrastructure including build systems, and shared libraries across Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, and TypeScript
- Own and evolve gRPC protocol definitions and language bindings that enable cross-service communication
- Develop and maintain infrastructure libraries for messaging (RabbitMQ), caching (Redis), and data persistence (DynamoDB, MongoDB)
- Build and operate core platform services including organization management, tenant data lifecycle, and Jira Cloud integration
- Drive technical standards, architectural decisions, and best practices across the engineering organization
- Mentor and guide developers across multiple teams on platform usage and best practices
- Improve developer experience through better tooling, documentation, and self-service capabilities
- Ensure platform reliability, performance, and security through monitoring, observability, and operational excellence
- Collaborate with product teams to understand their needs and translate them into platform capabilities
- Lead technical initiatives that span multiple teams and services
- Write efficient, readable, maintainable, and testable code with comprehensive test coverage
- Review code and provide constructive feedback that elevates the entire team
Who you are:
- Has 8+ years of experience in server-side development with strong expertise in Java and/or Kotlin
- Has experience building and maintaining platform/infrastructure systems at scale
- Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, including messaging patterns, caching strategies, and data consistency
- Strong experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration
- Extensive experience with AWS services (DynamoDB, Lambda, S3, etc.)
- Experience with gRPC/Protocol Buffers and designing cross-language APIs
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Java/Kotlin, Go, Python, TypeScript) – ability to work across the stack
- Experience with message queuing systems (RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar)
- Strong database skills including SQL, MongoDB, and DynamoDB with focus on performance optimization
- Experience building developer tools, SDKs, or internal platforms
- Track record of driving technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction
- Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Experience mentoring engineers and fostering technical growth across teams
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- Strong understanding of Computer Science fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, system design
- Upper-intermediate spoken and written English
- Ability to work autonomously, make sound technical decisions, and drive projects to completion
- Experience with observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, etc.) and operational best practices
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Atlassian ecosystem and Jira Cloud development
- Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform tools
- Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and optimization
- Background in SRE practices and production operations
- Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools
